Set your Slack status with an Apple Shortcut

A small integration that lets a shortcut update your Slack status, set its expiry or clear it when you are done.

Personal automation tool

My role. Built the service connecting Apple Shortcuts to Slack.

Put the update inside the activity

A shortcut for a meeting or focus session can carry the Slack status that goes with it. This service gives Apple Shortcuts a way to send the status text, emoji and optional expiry to Slack.

The service updates the Slack account that authorised it. It can run locally or on a hosted server, reachable from the device running the shortcut.

How it works
Flow diagram: an Apple Shortcut sends status text, emoji and a duration to the status service, which calls Slack to set the status on the linked account. The status then either expires at the chosen time or is removed early by a clear shortcut.

Let temporary statuses expire

A status can expire after a chosen number of minutes or at a specific time. For example, a focus-session shortcut can set a status for the duration of that session.

A separate clear action removes the status early. The shortcut controls these changes explicitly; the service does not infer whether a meeting has ended or whether someone is still busy.
